Families, carers and kin are often central to the everyday support of people living with mental health conditions. Yet their experiences are often misunderstood, simplified or avoided.

They may be seen as essential in moments of crisis but overlooked when they need support themselves. They may navigate the stigma and discrimination directed at the person they love, while also facing judgement, blame, exclusion or discrimination in their own right.

Mental Health Carers Australia is pleased to host Professor Nicola Reavley, Deputy Director of the Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing at the University of Melbourne.

Nicola is widely recognised for her research in population mental health, mental health literacy, stigma and discrimination. Her work helps us understand how broader community attitudes shape experiences of mental ill health, distress, help-seeking, service access and social inclusion.

In this webinar, Nicola will share findings from a nationally representative survey of people who care for someone with a mental health condition. The research explores both positive and negative experiences of caring and identifies which population groups are more likely to report these experiences.

This session will explore the complex interplay between mental ill health, stigma, discrimination and caring relationships.

For MHCA, this conversation strengthens the case for a mental health system that is relational by design – one that recognises families, carers and kin not only for the support they provide, but as people with their own rights, needs, knowledge and expertise.
