National Advocacy Update: Mental Health Carers Australia (MHCA) continues to champion the needs and rights of those who support someone living with mental ill health.

At the MHFFTas Annual General Meeting, we were delighted to hear from Katrina Armstrong, CEO of Mental Health Carers Australia (MHCA), the national peak body representing the voices of mental health families, carers, and kin across the country.

Katrina shared an overview of the significant advocacy work being undertaken by MHCA to ensure that the experiences and perspectives of families and carers remain central to national mental health reform. MHCA continues to champion the needs and rights of those who support someone living with mental ill health—working closely with governments, sector partners, and people with lived experience to shape policies and programs that make a tangible difference in people's lives.

Key areas of advocacy

  • National Participation Register and Lived Experience Expertise Framework: Developing mechanisms to strengthen how family, carer, and kin expertise is recognised and embedded in system design and reform.
  • Expert Advisory Panels: Ensuring family and carer perspectives are represented at all levels of policy development and service planning.
  • Psychosocial supports outside of the NDIS: Advocating for sustainable, accessible supports for those who are ineligible for—or transitioning out of—the NDIS.
  • NDIS Reference Groups: Providing advice to ensure the needs and experiences of families and friends caring for NDIS participants are understood and addressed.
  • Productivity Commission Inquiry into the Implementation of the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement: Working to ensure that the voices and needs of families, carers, and kin are embedded in the implementation of national mental health and suicide prevention initiatives.
  • Webinars and resources: Delivering accessible information and connection opportunities for families, carers, and kin across Australia.

Through this work, MHCA continues to elevate the lived experience of caring for someone with mental ill health—advocating for recognition, inclusion, and support at every level of the mental health system.
