Upcoming free Peer Worker and leadership training to gain new skills as a Peer Worker and lead a Lived Experience workforce.
The Mental Health Council of Tasmania’s LEx Training Hub is organising some free one-day workshops across Tasmania for aspiring and upcoming Peer Workers and leaders who want to gain skills and experience leading a lived experience workforce:
1. Intro to Peer Work (one-day)

About the course:
This one-day course provides foundational skills suitable for aspiring Peer Workers and for current Peer Workers who seek to refresh their skills or to gain a new perspective on their practice.
The course content is structured to provide a comprehensive overview of Peer Work, covering essential topics such as the values of Peer Work, boundaries in Peer Work, and the importance of empathy, self-care, and integrating this understanding through self-reflective practice.
The course has been developed through a co-design approach with people with lived experience and Peer Workers, alongside input and feedback from the LEx Training Hub Course Advisory Group.
Who can benefit from the Introduction to Peer Work course?
- Aspiring Peer Workers: Individuals interested in becoming peer workers, who want to gain foundational knowledge and skills.
- Current Peer Workers: Those already working in the field who seek to refresh their skills or gain a new perspective on their practice.
This one-day course will help you with further knowledge and skills to;
- Identify and describe the Peer Worker role and the core values that underpin the Lived Experience Workforce.
- Apply the principles of reflective practice to the Peer Worker role.
- Articulate and recognise the importance of self-care in Peer Work.
- Demonstrate understanding of professional boundaries in Peer Work.
- Evaluate your lived experience story in line with ethical Peer Work practice.
2. Leading a Lived Experience Workforce

About the course:
The one-day ‘Leading a Lived Experience Workforce’ program is designed to equip leaders with the tools, knowledge and confidence to recruit, lead and retain a Lived Experience (LE) workforce. The course provides a safe space for learning, sharing ideas, and discussing strategies to support and embed the Lived Experience culture within organisations, leading to a sustainable and thriving workforce. The course has been developed through a co-design approach with people with lived experience, current Peer Workers and leaders of a Lived Experience workforce in collaboration with the LEx Training Hub’s Course Advisory Group.
Who can benefit from the Leading a Lived Experience Workforce course?
- Current leaders of Lived Experienced workers to refresh their skills or gain a new perspective on their practice
- People who are working towards (in conjunction with their organisation) a role of leading Lived Experience workers
- Aspiring leaders or experienced Peer Workers who want to gain foundational knowledge and skills in taking the steps to lead Lived Experience workers
Through this course, participants can expect to gain knowledge and skills to;
- Understand the value and unique contributions of Lived Experience workers, as well as address integration challenges.
- Implement best practices for recruiting, onboarding, and supporting LE workers.
- Confidently lead and develop LE workers, promoting ongoing growth and retention.
- Develop actionable strategies to embed LE roles sustainably within their organisation.
